Group meeting at Ashgabat International Airport. Accommodation at a 4-star hotel. After lunch, a city sightseeing tour will be conducted, including visits to the main architectural landmarks of the capital: Neutrality Park, Independence Park, Ruhnama Monument, World War II Heroes and Ashgabat Earthquake Victims Square. We will also visit the United Museum of History and conclude the tour at the observation deck of the Wedding Palace.
After breakfast, our group will depart in off-road vehicles towards the western direction, near the Iranian border, to the Kyzyl-Atrek area. We will start the day by visiting the mountain gorges of Firyuza and Chuli, driving along the winding mountain roads and enjoying the beauty of the Kopetdag Mountains. Then, we will visit the Geok-Tepe Mosque and stop at a horse farm, where we will have a two-hour encounter with the pride of the Turkmen people—the Akhal-Teke horses. For lunch, our group will arrive at the Kov-Ata Underground Lake, where we will descend 250m into a cave and take a bath in the warm water (+37 degrees) of this unique lake. Passing through the city of Serdar, we will turn south and continue towards Kyzyl-Atrek, one of the first places Vambery visited in Turkmenistan. We will spend the night in tents.
The next morning, we will head northwest through the village of Madau and arrive at the ancient fortress of Misrian, where we will explore the Mosque Portal, a couple of minarets, and caravanserais that Vambery visited in 1861 and left detailed descriptions of, which our historians still use today. Then, we will drive to the Mashat-Ata cemetery and visit the mausoleums and the Mashad Mosque (10th century), one of the oldest in Asia. By evening, we will settle for the night in tents in one of the fortresses in the Dahistan region.
In the morning, our group will head to Balkanabat (Nebit-Dag), the city of oil workers. On the way, we will visit the mud volcanoes near the village of Kum-Dag, for which we will hike 10 km up Mount Boyadag. By evening, we will arrive in Balkanabat and settle into the comfortable Nebitchi Hotel****.
After visiting the local bazaar, our group, just like Vambery, will start moving along the ancient riverbed of the Uzboy River, between the Greater and Lesser Balkhan Mountains, visiting wells and settlements that the great traveler also visited—Yaskhan, Burgun, and Dzhamal. For overnight accommodation, we will stay in one of the settlements, in the nomads' yurt, where we will taste traditional dishes prepared for us over an open fire.
On this day, the group's route will run along the salt depression of Bokdakshor and along the Uzboy River's course as we ascend to the Ustyurt Plateau. Continuing eastward, we will visit the desert village of Melekoch, where we will learn about the ethnography of the desert people. We will see hunting dogs and falcons, observe the process of bread making, and witness the production of national rugs called "koshma." We will set up our camp on the ancient Uzboy Riverbed, in close proximity to the Parthian fortress of Igde-Kala (2nd century BCE).
After the excursion to the fortress, we will travel along the Uzboy River's course to the new Turkmen Lake, Altyn Asyr. We will visit the villages of Davaly and Balayshem, ancient stopping points on the Silk Road to Khiva. After visiting the sacred site of Kurtish Baba and the caravanserai of Talykhan-Kala, we will head north and set up camp on the riverbed. We will spend the evening exploring the surroundings.
The next day, we will continue north along the caravan route, visiting the wells of Gel-Geldy, Orta-Kuyu, and Charyshly, and spend the night at the fortress of Gyaur-Kala (1st-2nd centuries CE).
On this day, we will enter the territory of Khorezm and visit one of the most beautiful fortresses, Shakh-Senem, then Akchagelin and Diyarbakir, and conclude the day with a visit to the capital of Khorezm, Kunya-Urgench. For the night, we will stay at a hotel in the regional center, the city of Dashoguz. A farewell dinner will be held at one of the city's restaurants.
After breakfast, we will accompany the group to the Uzbek border, heading towards Khiva.
